Skeleton Bay · Donkey Bay
The World's Longest Left
"Namibia's Skeleton Bay is the longest sand-bottom left in the world. It's a wave that shouldn't exist, but it does."
— Matt BromleyJust minutes from Pelican Point Lodge lies one of surfing's most mythical waves — Skeleton Bay, also known as Donkey Bay. A wave so perfect, so impossibly long, that surfers travel from every corner of the globe just for the chance to ride it.
This is not your average surf break. Skeleton Bay produces barrels that can run for over a kilometre, with rides lasting up to two minutes. It's the kind of wave that redefines what surfers think is possible.

The Wave
A Phenomenon of Nature
Skeleton Bay is a sand-bottom left-hand point break that produces some of the longest, most perfectly formed barrels on Earth. When the conditions align — a south-southwest swell, offshore easterly winds, and the right sandbank configuration — the wave comes alive.
The wave breaks along a stretch of desert coastline where the Namib's dunes meet the Atlantic. There are no buildings, no boardwalks, no crowds — just raw, untouched nature and a wave that seems to go on forever.

Surf and Stay at the Edge of the World
Your Base Camp
Pelican Point Lodge offers the ultimate base for surfers chasing Skeleton Bay. After a day in the water, return to eight ocean-facing suites, fresh seafood, and the kind of solitude that only the Skeleton Coast can provide.
When to Come
Skeleton Bay is most consistent from March to September, when south-southwest swells generated in the Southern Ocean reach the Namibian coast. The wave needs specific conditions to break at its best.
RAMSAR Protected
Extended stays of a week or more are recommended for surfers, as the wave doesn't break every day. But when it does, you'll understand why people call it the best wave on the planet.
When to Come
Timing Your Visit
Best Season
May to September offers the most consistent swells. The Southern Hemisphere winter sends powerful groundswells up from the Antarctic.
Water Temperature
Cold. The Benguela Current keeps water temperatures between 12-16°C (54-61°F). A quality 4/3mm wetsuit with boots and gloves is essential.
Skill Level
Expert only. This is one of the most challenging waves in the world. Strong swimming ability and big wave experience are prerequisites.
Equipment
Bring multiple boards — the wave is notorious for breaking equipment. Step-ups and guns in the 6'6" to 8'0" range are recommended.
